Born in Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Clare Matney was educated in both Ireland and England and received her medical degree from University College Dublin. Then after completing internships in Ireland and Malawi, Africa, she lived and worked in Africa for several years before immigrating to the United States with her family. After settling in California, Dr. Matney completed a three-year pediatric residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center, after which she joined the university faculty and began her specialization in the field of forensic child abuse medicine.
During her long and distinguished career at Loma Linda, Dr. Clare Matney served as the Medical Director of the child abuse and neglect teams at Loma Linda University Medical Center, at Riverside County Medical Center, and at the Children’s Fund Assessment Center in San Bernardino, California, which she personally helped to found in the 1990’s.
Dr. Clare Matney is nationally and internationally recognized as a lecturer and medical expert in the field of forensic pediatrics, and over the years, she has trained countless medical students, residents, doctors and other medical professionals and law enforcement personnel in recognizing, reporting, and treating cases of child abuse. Dr. Clare has treated hundreds of abused, neglected, and even murdered babies and children, and she has testified in court dozens of times as an expert witness on her cases.
In 2016, Dr. Clare retired from Loma Linda, and she briefly was able to enjoy a full-time pursuit of her many outside interests and hobbies, which include art, music, gardening, and raising exotic chickens. But then when First Step Recovery Center began to grow, she was called out of retirement by her grateful husband, Dr. Glenn Matney, to help him run the treatment center and his full-time pediatric practice.
Dr. Clare Matney now serves as First Step Recovery Center’s Chief Operating Officer and Assistant Medical Director, performing the medical management of many of our patients, as well as managing our staff, and supervising our various financial grant programs.
