Escaping the Epidemic
These legal medications have been developed to relieve pain and suffering, but they also happen to be highly addictive. These pills, especially when taken in combination with benzodiazepine sleeping pills and anxiety medications such as Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Ambien, Lunesta, and dozens more, are overtaking heroin overdose as the biggest cause of drug abuse deaths today.
The over-prescribing of these medicines is a world-wide public health crisis, and thousands upon thousands of these pills are in the hands of illegal drug dealers today. Opiates are an exploding epidemic among young people today, who often find it far easier to get these pills from family members or friends than to get alcohol or cigarettes. In today’s world, unless they are getting it from Mom and Dad’s liquor cabinet, it is far more difficult for teenagers to get alcohol or cigarettes than it is for them to get marijuana, opiate pills, or even street heroin to smoke or inject in cities such as Phelan or Hesperia.
First Step Recovery Center provides an ongoing program of group and individual therapy and a meaningful transition to a lifestyle change of abstinence-focused recovery. Many patients, especially in early sobriety, also require a medical management program for craving and side effect reduction using medications such as Suboxone, Vivitrol, naltrexone, clonidine and/or other medications. Our medical experts can evaluate patients and prescribe these treatments when needed.
Also, it is vitally important that all dual-diagnosis mental health issues be dealt with appropriately, as well as any history of post-traumatic stress disorder from combat, child abuse, domestic violence, or a life on the streets. We provide that therapy at First Step Recovery Center in Victorville.
